Question of the Day: Web Designers

Why is it so easy to name the world’s greatest clothing designers, car designers, videogame designers, and industrial designers, but so hard to pinpoint the world’s greatest Web designers?

A simple answer would be that there are more Web designers than those of other types, but I find this kind of brute-force argument inelegant and unconvincing.

Perhaps it is harder to judge the quality of Web designs, largely because of the newness of the medium. Or perhaps the industry lacks the scaffolding that other older disciplines have–the annual awards and shows.

What do you think?

  1. I think it’s the same reason you don’t hear much about the world’s best container ship designers. Web sites are enormous undertakings with vast legions of people implementing them nowadays, at least if they do anything interesting. While they may have “architects” or “producers” who put together the overall look and design, there are rarely “web designers” who could take credit for an entire web effort with a straight face.

  2. Lack of uniform rating criteria could be one reason. It could be (a) User experience (b)no. of hits (c) ease of download / page flips (d) better revenue generation – in which order is always debatable.
