Work Out While You Work

Work Out While You Work

The folks at the Mayo Clinic have designed an office which combines a desk and a treadmill so that you can work out while you work.

I could definitely use one of those. When I was younger, my family had a simple unpowered treadmill. You held on to two poles and then walked. My dad added a simple belt so that I could read while I was working out.

I’m definitely going to have something like this when I finally buy a house!

  1. You realize, of course, that this is a direct lift from the second scene in Bananas, where Woody Allen plays a product tester who is testing “The Execu-sizer” — an office set-up where the desk chair is a bicycle, the phones are attached to resistance coils, and the drawer is attached to a weight machine.

I’m just curious how much power can one generate by running 30 minutes on the threadmil? If that power were to be somehow efficiently stored, would it be enough to power say, the air conditioning unit for an hour?

That would be cool.. in more ways than one šŸ™‚

  3. One calorie is equal to 4,184 joules. One watt is one joule per second.

So if you burn 400 calories an hour by running on a treadmill, you are generating about 500 watts of energy.

A box fan consumes about 160 watts per hour, so you should be able to power a fan without a problem.
